Demilade was standing just outside the door. We all froze on the spot as he looked from one person to the other.
“What’s Uncle Rex doing here, in your room?” He asked Sophie.
Of course Sophie didn’t have anything to say neither did uncle Rex. If I wanted a wicked person now, I would have turned my face away like I didn’t know what was going on. Then again, Demilade had already seen me with them so I was bound to be involved.
“What exactly is going on here?” Demilade asked, his voice louder this time.
“Nothing is happening. Uncle Rex was going to see your father when he saw me going into Sophie’s room. I told him Sophie wasn’t feeling well so he entered to check on her. We were just seeing him off.” I said, hoping he believed my story.
“What’s wrong with you?” He asked Sophie.
“Nothing serious, just cramps.” She said.
“Okay, sorry. I was coming to tell you that Christine says she has been trying to reach you but you’re not picking up your phone.” He said.
At the mention of Christine’s name, I wanted to hiss but I didn’t want Demilade to think I was jealous. He looked at me immediately to see my reaction but I looked on blankly. Sophie thanked Uncle Rex for coming to check on her and went back into the room with Demilade.
“I’ll walk you down.” I said to uncle Rex and we started walking to the stairs.
“I thought you said you wanted to see my dad.” Demilade came out again.
Na wa o, this is how somebody will lie and forget his/her lie.
“I think it would be better to wait for him downstairs.” Uncle Rex quickly said.
Demilade looked at both of us, with a look of suspicion before going back into the room and shutting the door.
We walked downstairs quietly and uncle Rex made for the door but I pulled him back.
“What is it?” He asked angrily.
“Didn’t you just say you were coming to wait downstairs? You want them to see you going home immediately?” I asked him.
Do you know that this ungrateful old dog started telling me to leave him alone? That he didn’t beg me to cover up from him and that I should learn to mind my business. Imagine the rubbish, such arrant nonsense.
“Ok now, let me go and tell Mr Tunde that you’re shagging his daughter. I’m sure he’ll hand you and award for it.” I started walking back but he quickly held me back.
“Wait wait, I’m sorry.” He said. “I didn’t mean to be ungrateful.”
I looked at him from head to toe and shook my head.
“Just know that you owe me a lot. So if I tell you to jump, you better ask how high, except you want my mouth running to Mr Tunde.” I said.
“Absolutely.” He nodded his head.
I hissed and went back to my room. The dram that had happened was enough to last me a year. Luckily for me, I was going home the next day, at least, I would rest small. Then I remembered my mother and sighed. That woman was definitely not going to let me rest with all her wahala and errands, mscheww.
I had just started putting my things together when I remembered thatI hadn’t told Sophie I was traveling the next day. So I went to her room hoping that Demilade would have gone by then.
I knocked on the door and waited for her to come and open it. When she hadn’t come one minute later, I knocked again, harder this time.
“Do you want to break the door?” She said as she opened it.
“No o. I just wanted you to hear it very well before you start asking me why I didn’t knock. Plus, I didn’t want to come and meet another uncomfortable situation.” I entered and she shut the door.
Sophie sighed and we both sat on her bed. I told her why I had come and she didn’t seem pleased with what I had to say. She didn’t want me to go yet. I explained to her that I had to go and get my things and that my mother wanted to see me badly.
“But you already started work. You can’t just go like that.” She pointed out.
“I’m sure uncle Rex can take care of that.” I smiled.
“And Demilade? How will you tell him that you’re taking a break after just resuming?” She said.
“I’m sure you can take care of that.” I smiled again.
I was quite confused. Is it that aunty wanted me to keep wearing three clothes for the entire service year abi what? Or maybe she wanted me to continue begging her for clothes and shoes and hair so that she can label me a wretched beggar, na wa.
I was about to leave her room before I remembered that I hadn’t gotten the full gist about her and uncle Rex so I turned back and asked her. Instead of the babe to drop the gist, she started forming secretive, telling me that she didn’t want to talk about it.
“Ok o. If you like, be hiding it. Let me just go and come back first, you will talk by force.” I said.
She smiled as I walked out of her room. I went back to mine and saw missed calls from Fowi so I called him back. After asking and asking me where I had been, he finally told me why he had called me many times. He wanted to find out what time I wanted to travel but since I didn’t answer, he bought tickets for the first flight.
“First flight?” I shouted.
“What’s wrong with it?” He asked me.
“It’s too early.” I lamented.
He laughed and said,
“It’s the best babe. Except you want to go through hours of flight delay.”
I sighed and agreed with him. I didn’t want to sit in the airport for hours waiting for one god forsaken plane. After we talked for a few minutes,he hung up and I continued packing. I wanted to tell my mother that I was coming the next day but I thought against it.
If she knew I was coming, she would prepare wahala down and keep for me and since I didn’t want that, I decided to surprise her.
By the time it was time for dinner, I was done packing so I went to Sophie’s room so we could go down to eat together but aunty was nowhere to be found. I went downstairs but I didn’t see her there either. When I asked about her, one of the house staff told me she had gone out with Demilade. I felt like I had been slied. How could she have gone out and left me at home, alone.
I was mad for a few minutes before it clicked in my head. I jumped for joy and came up with a solid plan to get what I wanted. I went upstairs, took a bath and set my plan in motion and boy, it was something.
